MATES Freshmen

It is always great to have students and faculty from MATES visit Sedge. You have both the enthusiasm and knowledge to make your experience more valuable than the average group. Nice job with your first coordinator responsibilities Mr. Werner. Having three classes in quick succession is hard work!
We hope you students keep up your interest in marine biology and saltmarsh ecology and some day find yourself working in this field. Remember, you are one of the closest groups to Sedge. We hope you will come back to visit the Marine Conservation Zone with family and friends.
PS What happened with your lab? Were your hypotheses (re. the water sampling at various depths)correct?
Jim

The trip to Sedge Island was very successful last week. 38 freshmen students braved the elements and walked away with a lot of knowledge and great memories. All three groups were well behaved and involved in several activities. Each class worked together and completed a primary productivity lab. They had to work in groups to measure and compare the dissolved oxygen levels at specific depths. Then they had to take the data, graph it, and find where the maximum net primary production occurred. Besides the lab, we spent over 2 hours on a nature kayak tour led by Jim Merritt, the program director at Sedge. The students quietly kayaked by the nesting pair of Peregrine Falcons and numerous Ospreys. The students had to be very quiet or else the birds would be scared off of the nest leaving the eggs or young vulnerable to the predatory crows. After Kayaking Jim and I taught the students how top dig up clams with clam rakes. Each class enjoyed clams on the grill as a dinner appetizer. After dinner we fished in the channel in front of the house, without any luck. Some students also seined and found several unusual cold water species, such as Haddock and Rat-Tailed Cucumbers. On the first afternoon, John Wnek showed up with a boat-load of Northern Diamondback Terrapins (literally), 47 in two traps. The students were amazed as John excitedly shared his knowledge of Project Terrapin. Soon after several students were measuring, notching, and tagging the terrapins. The students loved it! Before bed we played the infamous game of Electric Moonsnail, a game of reaction and speed. Every day the students were up at sunrise sweeping out their rooms, getting ready for Jim Merritt’s room inspection. After breakfast they finished the lab exercise and shared their results with the other groups. Then it was back to reality.

I would like to thank the OCVTS Board of Education, Administration, Peg Roma, Alison Carroll, John Wnek, Janelle, and Jim Merritt for allowing this great experience to take place.

The trip to Sedge Island was an unforgettable experience. Learning to clam was much more fun than I expected. Canoeing and kayaking were fun as well, and allowed us to get close to organisms in their natural environments. In addition, we learned how to conserve resources in everyday life and help the environment. Sedge Island would be a great place to volunteer over the summer!

Sedge island is probably going to be my favorite field trip of all time, I don't think nothing can top that. From a "summary" of a ghost story to getting this close to a wonderous falcon, everything was one memory after the next. I would love to go back and volunteer!

I'm a freshman at the MATES Academy, and i have to say that sedge was my favorite field experience so far this year! The kayaking, fishing, clamming and birdwatching were amazing! As an avid birder, I was enthralled by the diversity of avian wildlife in the marshes. I fully apreaciate that I got to get so close to a nesting pair of Perigrines. The abundance of oystercatchers, great egrets, snowy egrets, willets, terns, and especially ospreys was amazing. The sedge islands are full to the brim with unique wildlife, from ribbed mussels imbedded on the marsh backs to terrapins and moons snails!
Jim was very helpful and knowledgeable, telling us all about the area and quite a "summary" of the resident ghost's story.
I really enjoyed my time at sedge and hope to return sometime to volunteer.

My Sedge Island experience was absolutely amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it, ranging from the boat ride to the island, planning our kayaking route, and clamming near the house. I am confident that i speak for the entire freshmen class when I state that we have all gained a greater understading of the Barnegat Bay environment throughout our stay at the island. In my opinion, our Sedge Island experience brought us closer as a class, being that we had to work together on our labs, cooking, etc.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jim Merrit, Mr. Wnek, and Mr. and Mrs. Werner for making this an experience that I will never forget - and especially for all of your patience towards myself and my fellow classmates. Thanks to you, I hope to return to Sedge again in the near future!
